Description:
Classical ideas on electromagnetic radiation; sources of opacity: scattering, absorption and emission of radiation; hydrostatic equilibrium and energy transport in stars; radiation transport in stellar atmospheres; continuous spectra of stars and spectrum line formation; basic line-broadening mechanisms; natural or radiation damping, thermal and pressure broadening; analysis of stellar spectra; the Inglis-Tellar formula and the Curve of Growth; equations of stellar structure.

Assessment is by assignments and examination.

Prerequisite(s): AST231, 243 and MAT215 (or 214 or 203) and 216 (or 214 or 203).
